The Year of the Ox

The other week I had the opportunity to attend a Lunar New Year celebration at the Hong Kong Buffet in Parma that was put on by the Rotary Club of North Royalton – Broadview Heights.  Along with a buffet full of wonderful, yummy food and lots of cool stuff raffled off to raise funds for the group, we were all entertained by the Kwan Family Lion Dance team.

This traditional dance began over a thhousand years ago.  Legend has it that a small village was being terrorized by a ferocious beast called “the Nan”.   One night it what thought that a lion came from the east and frightened the beast away, saving the village.  To honor the lion, the village made a replica of it and danced it around the town to the beating of drums and cymbals to keep the evil “Nan” from coming back.  Since then the lion has become a symbol of good luck and good fortune for Chinese people all over the world.  During the lion dance, you can give the lion a money offering in a red envelope.  This is thought to bring the giver good fortune in the year to come.

This was a very neat event.  I left with a full tummy and hopes that my offering will bring me good luck in the year of the ox!

Jake turns two!

This past weekend I got the opportunity to meet Jake and his mom & dad.  In honor of Jake’s 2nd birthday we got some fun photographs while Jake got to show me all of his cool toys.  (I wish I had a teepee tent when I was a kid!)
